GUITAR (SIMPLE)

In this section we will go over the Guitar (simple) part and cover the five sections of Seven Nation Army. There will be video, notation, TAB and graphic notation that is colour coded to help you learn how to play it. On top of that we will learn about chords.

There are six (6) strings on a guitar - E, A,D, G, B, E. Frets are raised lines on the neck of the bass guitar - they mark where different notes fall on the instrument. Below is a guitar fret map showing you where these notes fall. You will also learn about reading TAB.

READING TAB

TAB is a form of notation. For Guitar it is made up six (6) lines, and numbers. The lines refer to each string - E, A, D, G, B, e (from low to high), and the numbers refer to which fret to press. If it is a 0, it means it is an open string (see below).

So in the below, you would repeatedly play the 2nd fret on the D string. The rhythm is written above the TAB [as seen below].

FRET MAP

As discussed above, the Guitar has frets. Below is a Fret Map (up to 7th fret) that shows what notes can be played, on what strings, and what fret. For example, B can be played by playing the A string on the 2nd fret.

CHORDS

Chords are where we play multiple notes at the same time. We do this by strumming the guitar. Strumming is where we move the pick or our finger quickly across the strings so that it sounds as if they were all struck at the same time.

We can strum in two (2) ways:

Down - n : Strum down to your knees

Up - v : Strum up to your chin

sim: Keep doing the same strumming pattern going

See below for an example

READING CHORDS

Instead of writing down every single note in a chord, shorthand chord symbols are used.

Example: Chord symbol - C, is short hand for a C major chord made up of the notes c, e, and g.

Instead of using normal noteheads to show the rhythm, slashed noteheads are used. So below the guitarist has to play a C chord to the rhythm of

Tah - tee tee - tah - tee tee
